Doctrine of Discovery:  The edict of Pope Nicholas in 1452, directed King Alfonso to &#8220;capture, vanquish, and subdue the saracens, pagans, and other enemies of Christ,&#8221; to &#8220;put them into perpetual slavery,&#8221; and &#8220;to take all their possessions and property.&#8221;
