lilac, my first initiation to something different than what you describe was going through a Navajo reservation in 1984. Stopped to eat in a small town on the rez where coal mining was going strong. Everything inside and outside was covered in gritty dust that I was pretty sure contained refuse from coal mining. In 2008 at the start of the presidential campaign I found this on youtube:
