At this moment I find myself struggling to find any words. Due to my upbringing what I think of first when I hear of the Navaho people are the “Code Talkers” who used their knowledge in saving the lives of many during WWII. http://www.navajocodetalkers.org/ And now as I read more regarding the Navaho and the us gov't all I can think at this moment is why am I surprised (considering the history of white treatment of ndn people)?

There is a terrific documentary called Homeland that documents this very thing as well as several other tribes struggling with pollution of their homeland. The sad thing is they are thinking of opening those uranium mines again.

lilac, my first initiation to something different than what you describe was going through a Navajo reservation in 1984. Stopped to eat in a small town on the rez where coal mining was going strong. Everything inside and outside was covered in gritty dust that I was pretty sure contained refuse from coal mining. In 2008 at the start of the presidential campaign I found this on youtube:

I found this 1985 documentary on You tube called "Broken Rainbow" parts 1-7.On December 1974 Congress passed public law 93-531.The Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act.It authorized the partitioning of joint use area and established the Navajo-Hopi Indian Relocation Commission which moved Navajo people from the reservation lands.This act was because the government wanted their land for the resources as it is still the same thing going on today.Jennifer

When I look at the history of this country, from 1492 to the present, well all I can say is those dudes have a lot of american company in hell and are continually initiating new ones into their club. 1/128th Indian blood; christ, their insatiable appetite knows no bounds, they'll come up with any load of crap, any heinous measure to wipe out a people for their own avarice. How can they sleep at night, I just don't know. I guess I'm just a naive gulliable girl from Iowa and I don't mean that as something funny.
