My name is Carolyn Jean Spang (birth) and in 1995 someone told me I needed to watch 'Thunderheart'. That did it for me and Pine Ridge captured my heart. There are some parallels in my life that I would like to introduce here. Here is the 'backstory' on me. Like 'Zintkala Nuni' or the Lost Bird of Wounded Knee, I was adopted by a man with the first name of 'Leonard', it was right after WWII and raised in Washington, D.C.

Unlike Zintkala, I did not know I was Indian and would not find that out until 1996, when a Muscogee man, working for the Sac & Fox told me he could find out about my adoption. He later said I was 'Cherokee', from the Bird Clan and would 'have to prove it'. While I am Cherokee, as well, I would find out in 2000 that my Grandfather was, Charles 'Bub' Spang was Northern Cheyenne. I really don't like puzzles and was handed a biggie.

In 2003 I took a DNA test and was connected to a third cousin, who is an enrolled member at Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Our connecting ancestor. I believe it is 'Raymond Brownthunder' (remember that Val Kilmer's name was 'Raymond' and the medicine man called him 'Thunderheart').

Raymond Brownthunder is the Great Grandfather of my cousin and I have Cherokee relatives who are 'Browns'. Maybe he dropped the last part of his name at a later time. In any case, Raymond Brownthunder was from Pine Ridge. He had become separated with his wife, who had ended up at Standing Rock.

Then I learn that the Northern Cheyenne are 'cousins' to the Lakota. O.k., so now the puzzle is clearning up. Anyway, like Celine Dion said in her song 'Immortality', "So this is who I am and this is all I know" (I love that song!) I am going to try and attach my recent photo by Larry 'Running Turtle' Salazar, an Apache friend of mine here in Texas...maybe there are some 'Brownthunders' on the Rez who might be able to make the connection. Ya never know. Thanks for listening and Russell Means, praying for a full recovery for you!!

Carol Jean Shoemaker (adoptive name)
