Ride With the Indians It Is Your Heart’s Desire

I want to ride with the Indians and just ride away
Across the Plains with Lakotah ‘till Dakota territory
Down the East Coast with the Cherokee and Iroquois Confederacy
And in Texas I will live with the Comanche and the Kiowa
The Ho – Chunk up North and T’lingit in Alaska
All five hundred and fifty Nations not the same
Each counted important, different in culture, language and name

I’ll grow some wings and fly away
Like an Eagle soars over the craggy canyon below
I’ll fly like an Eagle – one for bravery
And that special feather from the great bird
Will fall down at a Pow Wow when the music stops
‘Till someone picks it up and the music starts again
When the music starts again I’ll dance with the Indians
As the drum beats faster to the timing of the beat
I can hear the Indians and the dancing of their feet

I will ride with the Indians as they teach me things
Indigenous knowledge not wasted nor forgotten
How do clouds help you when you’ve lost your way?
Why watch a limbless bird build a place to stay?
Open the door for a stranger and let that person first
Learn some words of their tongue to quench your dry thirst
Don’t ask so many questions, learn to listen not just speak
When they say “Hey Kola!” they greet you as a friend
When they say “Doe Sharke” they mean “Good – bye” not the end
Don’t touch on their person, their hair or on their faces
It annoys and offends these dark and different races
You’ll learn why they cry and about the sadness in their eyes
I’ll learn to cry too and care ‘bout someone else’s tears

Lakotah word for God is “Wankan Tanka” The Great Mystery
For the wonders of creation you will never understand
The Hand that made it all and the Peoples of this Land
When there are no reasons or answers to this life that we live
It’s about not what we get but what we share and what we give
When they teach me to be Indian and how to be free again
Free to be responsible; free to be Indian
I’ll become Indian like you, like me, like you
When I become Indian only then will I be truly free
